Question

Every game this weekend features teams that used to play in the same division. The Colts-Patriots were in the AFC East together for years. The Chargers-Broncos are in the AFC West. And all four of the other teams have been in the NFC West -- 49ers, Seahawks, Panthers and Saints. Expanding this to Super Bowls, what was the only Super matchup that featured two teams that previously had been in the same division after the merger in 1970?

Answer

Bucs-Raiders following the 2002 season. When Tampa Bay joined the NFL in 1976, it spent a year in the AFC West. (That was the same year that Seattle was in the NFC West with New Orleans). If you want to go pre-merger, note that the Cardinals and Steelers (another Super Bowl matchup) were both in the "Century" Division in 1969. The Jets-Colts spent a lot of years together in the AFC East, but their Super Bowl occurred before they were placed in the same division.
