Question
Ken Stabler died yesterday. He was a legend with the Raiders in the '70s, helping them to their first Super Bowl title, and he also led Alabama to an undefeated season in 1966. He was not, however, even the first quarterback the Raiders drafted in 1968. What Tennessee State quarterback did Oakland select in the first round that year (one round before Stabler)?
Answer
Eldridge Dickey. Dickey was the first African-American quarterback to be drafted in the first round. He played quarterback in his first preseason, but the Raiders wanted to convert him to wide receiver. Dickey never played quarterback in a regular season game and finished his career with only 5 receptions.
