Allen Robinson

Bortles and wideout not on the same page

Allen Robinson has been one of the fantasy season's biggest disappointments, and it continued last night: 6 catches for 70 yards in a game Blake Bortles threw for 337 yards and 3 TDs on 54 attempts. But while part of the issue is that the Jaguars are making use of a No. 3 receiver more, most of it is simply that Bortles and Robinson aren't on the same page.

Bortles won't win any accuracy awards, but he actually currently has a higher completion percentage (60%) than he did in either of his first two seasons (58.9 and 58.6). And although the Jaguars are using a No. 3 receiver, Marqise Lee, more than in the past, Robinson currently has 70 targets -- only three players (Antonio Brown, T.Y. Hilton and Mike Evans) have more than he does.

The problem is that they're not connecting on enough of those throws; either Bortles is missing him, or Robinson isn't running as crisp routes or getting enough separation. Or all three, plus some drops in there. Bottom line, Robinson's receptions-to-targets ratio is one of the worst in the league.

The table below shows the 72 players with at least 25 receptions so far this season. The only receiver to catch a lower percentage of balls thrown his way is Brandon Marshall (another of 2016's bigger disappointments, and working with another struggling quarterback). It includes some running backs and tight ends, many of whom are catching shorter passes near the line of scrimmage. But most wideouts are faring better than Robinson -- even the guys running strictly downfield routes.

So can Robinson turn things around in the second half of the season? Only if Bortles plays better, or the Jaguars make the once-unthinkable decision to bench him for Chad Henne. Neither seems likely to happen, but you never know.
