The Giants cut Victor Cruz two days ago, an easy decision with him slated to count over $9 million against the cap in 2017. Cruz wasn't a productive player in 2016, and hasn't done much since blowing out his knee back in 2014.
That being said, Cruz thinks he can still play, and although some are betting against him -- one scout told an ESPN writer Cruz is "probably done" -- it's not out of the question he emerges as a significant No. 3 wideout somewhere. Apparently the Broncos are a team that will at least kick the tires on him.
Denver has a strong receiving duo in Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, but essentially nothing at No. 3, and didn't get many contributions from tight end last year, either. Reasonable to think Cruz could be a contributor for them, if healthy.
Health is the big issue. Cruz is just 30 years old, and did have back-t0-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons prior to his injuries. If healthy, and if Denver gets better at quarterback, it's possible.
For now Denver is apparently going to have Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch compete for the No. 1 job. But John Elway has shown in the past a willingness to pursue a veteran option. Peyton Manning was a special case, but Tony Romo figures to be available this offseason. You never know.
No one should necessarily be counting on Cruz being a relevant fantasy player in 2017. But stranger things have happened.
