Question
The Steelers and Chargers play tonight, but Ben Roethlisberger is shelved with an elbow injury, preventing an old-timer matchup against Philip Rivers. They were both selected in the first round in 2004, and they’re both in their 16th season, both with the same franchises all along. When was the last time such a matchup occurred? Looking for two quarterbacks drafted in the same year, always playing for only one team and meeting in their 16th seasons?
Answer
Dan Marino and John Elway didn’t have a lot of head-to-head meetings, but they played in December, 1998, with the Dolphins winning 31-21 in the next-to-last game of the regular season. It was the final loss of Elway’s career (the Broncos went on to beat Atlanta in the Super Bowl that season). Both Elway and Rivers were actually drafted by other teams, but both were traded before they ever signed with said teams.
