Question
Philadelphia plays at Buffalo Sunday, creating some potential for a matchup of older running backs. Darren Sproles (who’s been out with a quad injury) and Frank Gore are both 36. Hopefully they both make it on the field. In the last 40 years, there’s been only one pair of running backs who were both at least 34 who carried the ball in the same game. It happened in two games in the 2010 season (and with a team that made the playoffs).
Answer
The Patriots, with Fred Taylor and Kevin Faulk (both 34). They both had carries in two games that year. Using the sort tools at the Pro Football Reference website I see two other pairs from the Super Bowl era, both from the ‘70s. In 1978, Kansas City and Oakland played, with 36-year-old MacArthur Lane going head-to-head against 34-year-old Pete Banaszak. In 1974, Kansas City and Minnesota played, with both Wendell Hayes (34) and Bill Brown (36) both getting carries.
