Texas Coug Squeaks Out the Win in Week 9 of the Blackout

This week Tom Irwin from Argyle, TX had our best entry with his team, Texas Coug. Margins were tight in a difficult week for fantasy. Tom’s 234.90 points takes the prize by a margin of just .30 points! It’s pretty easy to figure out which choices contributed to making the top of the leaderboard in week nine. Everyone in the top five started Dak Prescott and CJ Stroud at QB. Four of the five had Jake Furgeson and the fifth topped them with Dalton Schultz. Four of the five started Josh Jacobs as well. But in a standing ovation worthy turn of events, only one manager in the whole of week nine had the stones to start the WR1 among eligible players, Tank Dell, and it earned him the win. Bravo Tom Irwin! Hard to imagine a more deserving way to take the week. Check out this week’s winning roster:

The field finally took some revenge on the Blackout this week. Only four of the max scoring players were unavailable and two of those were kickers! That’s not to say that everyone cashed in. Dak Prescott was the most selected player overall, Dalton Schultz and the Chargers DST were on just over 25% of rosters. Beyond that, CJ Stroud got a bit of love at just under 12% but out of thirteen positions, nine of the top scoring players were selected in the single digits.

There was one very notable score from outside of the player pool this week. Noah Brown, WR, HOU came out of nowhere with 27.30 points in the scoring bonanza in Houston to finish as the WR3 on the week. He would have been WR2 among eligible players had he been in the pool. Shockingly, seven out of thirteen top scorers came from just that game even without Brown! RB Keaton Mitchell also put up 20.40 points for the Baltimore Ravens and likely earned himself the top waiver add of the week in fantasy.

Devante Adams is the lone holdover from week eight’s most selected players roster and he did not reward the faith everyone placed in him even though the Raiders rolled the Giants. Although only two players appear on both the top scoring and most popular rosters, the field managed some solid picks. Jake Furgeson, Josh Jacobs and Joe Mixon paid off for the large swath of managers who selected them. Justin Herbert along with Kyle Pitts and all of the selected WRs did not. This week’s most selected players put up just 52% of the max score.

Texas Coug came out of nowhere this week with only his second top hundred finish to take the week. He’s participated in just eight of the nine weeks and is sitting 262nd overall. Perhaps an even more impressive feat than being the only manager to select the WR1, The Mighty Grimace’s had their second consecutive 2nd place finish in week nine. They have opened up a 63.2 point lead atop the overall leaderboard and are looking like the team to beat going forward. To put that in context, the difference between one and two after week nine is comparable to the difference between two and twenty-two. I also want to give some props to Pizza Pie, who finished 14th this week and last to move into the number five overall spot. Here’s a look at the Top 25 Overall:

A little feedback from a long time customer.

Our fantasy pool is entering its 25^th year and I have used multiple books and on-line tools over the years.

I have locked on to Fantasy Index as my go to for the last 5 years and have won the pool 3 of those years and finished no lower than 4^th.

Interesting to see how much more accurate you were at the end of the year compared to other books my competitors used.

I wanted to thank you for such an amazing product and your customer service. I ordered the wrong date for my update and called to correct the mistake. Your customer service person was very kind, helpful and took care of the issue immediately.

I have used your product for the past 18 years or so… Every now and then I will be tempted and look at what other magazines have to offer, quickly realizing no one comes close.

In addition to the magazine, I started buying the weekly updates years ago when my dad taught me a lesson. The draft came and dad was sitting in the 12 hole for his pick. He told me he felt very comfortable about who he was going to select but would not tell me who his prized gem was to be. I was doubtful. The pick? Priest Holmes (his first dynamite year). I remember telling my dad, "that is a decent pick but they plan to pull him at the goal line." Ever the teacher, dad explained he had purchased the Fantasy Football Index update and read Holmes would get the goal line carries. "Update?", I asked. That was 2002 and Holmes had 21 rushing TDs and Dad won the title! Lesson learned.

By the way, I have made the title game for the last 5 years in a row. Thanks for the detailed, hard work and an great product!
