Antoine Winfield Jr., Buccaneers Agree to Four-Year Extension

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made safety Antoine Winfield Jr. the highest-paid defensive back in the National Football League. Both parties agreed to a four-year contract extension worth up to $84.1 million, including $45 million in guarantees.

Winfield’s new average annual salary ($21.025 million) is $25,000 higher than Jaire Alexander’s rate. It’s a great call for the Buccaneers after the former Minnesota standout earned First Team All-Pro honors last season. Winfield finished his fourth year in Tampa Bay with 122 tackles, 12 passes defended, six sacks, four fumble recoveries, three interceptions, and a league-leading six forced fumbles.

More importantly, he played all 19 Buccaneers games last season after being limited to 15 games in 2021 and 14 in 2022. The Buccaneers selected Winfield in the second round of the 2020 draft and won Super Bowl 55 in his rookie season. However, his draft position means he doesn’t have a fifth-year option.

In addition to his All-Pro selection last year, Winfield was a 2021 Pro Bowler after tallying 88 tackles, six pass deflections, two sacks, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles.

Winfield’s fellow safety, Jordan Whitehead, received a two-year, $9 million contract from the Buccaneers in free agency. Linebacker Lavonte David signed a one-year, $8.5 million contract, while defensive tackle Greg Gaines inked a one-year, $3.5 million deal. On offense, Tampa Bay extended Mike Evans’ tenure with a two-year, $52 million contract.
