Derwin James Might Play Some Offense For Chargers?

Derwin James has made a name for himself on defense, earning three Pro Bowl and two First-Team All-Pro selections while playing for the Los Angeles Chargers. But as he mentioned in his recent appearance on ‘The Goat Farm Show,’ he might play some snaps on offense this season.

The veteran defensive back, who will be playing in his seventh NFL season, said Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh might have a package for him. If he does play on the other side of the ball, it will likely be at wide receiver, a position that Los Angeles’ AFC team needs much help with.

After losing Mike Williams and Keenan Allen in free agency, the Chargers will rely on unproven wideouts Quentin Johnston and Ladd McConkey to field passes from Justin Herbert. However, Johnston continued to drop the ball during training camp, while the jury is still out on McConkey’s rookie season performance.

James is among the best safeties in the game, as proven by his 125 tackles and seven pass deflections last season. He also has eight sacks after missing the 2020 season due to a torn meniscus.

Two years after that injury, the Chargers signed James to a four-year, $76.4 million extension, making him the highest-paid safety until Antoine Winfield Jr. finalized his four-year, $84.1 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this offseason.

As of the 2023 season, James had 520 tackles, 11.5 sacks, 32 pass deflections, and five forced fumbles in 69 career games (including playoffs).
