Notable WR Moves During Roster Cutdown Deadline

As teams finalized their initial 53-man roster for the 2024 NFL season, some notable wide receivers were released or moved to injured reserve. While teams reduced their lineups before the August 27 deadline, they could make additional transactions, provided they don’t exceed the limit.

The Denver Broncos released Tim Patrick, who was returning after missing the 2022 and 2023 seasons due to torn ACL and Achilles injuries. Before those setbacks, he had back-to-back 700-yard seasons with the Broncos, the only team he has played for since entering the league in 2018. However, the Detroit Lions will reportedly sign Patrick to their practice squad.

Meanwhile, the Carolina Panthers released Terrace Marshall Jr. after three seasons. The Panthers selected him in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, and he will finish his stint in Carolina with 110 receptions for 767 yards and a touchdown. His release means that Diontae Johnson, Adam Thielen, Jonathan Mingo, and Xavier Legette will be at the top of the Panthers wide receiver depth chart.

The Houston Texans released Noah Brown despite his 567 yards and two touchdowns last season. His tenure in Houston ends after one season mainly because of the Texans’ stacked wideout rotation, which features Stefon Diggs, Tank Dell, and Nico Collins.

The Kansas City Chiefs released Kadarius Toney, who has been with the squad since 2022. He was a part of two Super Bowl-winning teams in Kansas City and registered the longest punt return in Super Bowl history (65 yards) in Super Bowl LVII. However, the former first-round pick did not play for the Chiefs during the 2023 postseason. Toney will finish his Kansas City run with 48 receptions for 390 yards and four touchdowns in 23 games.

Finally, the Miami Dolphins placed Odell Beckham Jr. on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, meaning he will miss at least the first four games of 2024. After signing with the Dolphins this offseason, he hasn’t practiced with the squad due to an undisclosed injury. Beckham played for the Baltimore Ravens last season, finishing with 565 yards and three touchdowns.
