The milestones keep coming for quarterback Patrick Mahomes following their 2024 NFL season-opening victory over the Baltimore Ravens. He overtook the late Len Dawson as the franchise’s passing yards leader despite playing 86 fewer games.
The record-breaking play came in the 8:05 mark of the second quarter when Mahomes found tight end Travis Kelce for a 23-yard completion, allowing the two-time NFL Most Valuable Player to overtake Dawson’s 28,507 career passing yards.
Mahomes finished the game with 20 completions for 291 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He also added three rushing yards from two attempts. Meanwhile, his career tally is 28,175 passing yards one game into the season, and he has 5,135 yards during the playoffs.
No one left to pass but himself.

While breaking Dawson’s record is good for Mahomes, he will remain bad news for other NFL teams in the coming years. He has much football left and is clearly at the top of his game. Despite his previous achievements, Mahomes has additional motivation for 2024 because the Chiefs can become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowl titles.
The road to that goal won’t be easy because the Chiefs will have the target on their back all season. However, it’s also unwise to bet against Mahomes, especially after a confidence-boosting victory over the Ravens.
