Long-term QBs

Dak Prescott's next snap likely coming in 2025

Dak Prescott is calling it a wrap for the season. Reports indicate he’ll be undergoing season-ending surgery on his hamstring.

I’m not sure Prescott could have made it back this year had he wanted to. Supposedly, the injury involved the hamstring being torn away from the bone. This is far more than a standard hamstring pull. Regardless, the Cowboys will be eliminated from playoff contention long before Prescott might have played.

Looking ahead, he’ll be healthy heading into the 2025 season, but I don’t know that expectations should be all that high. He’s more of an above-average quarterback rather than a difference maker, and there’s not great talent around him. I expect the Cowboys will be bringing in a new coach and coordinator, and the rebuild process will be made harder by the big contract they gave Prescott just before the start of the season.

If I were walking into a dynasty draft today, I wouldn’t be interested in picking Prescott to be my starter. And when picking my second quarterback, I’d be more inclined to go with somebody a lot younger. Certainly Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams and Bo Nix, who’ve had some first-year success. And I’d pick Drake Maye and even J.J. McCarthy before Prescott as well. McCarthy looked very good in his one preseason appearance, and I think he’ll be getting plugged into that high-flying Vikings offense next year (with Sam Darnold probably signing somewhere to serve as a bridge quarterback or lesser starter). McCarthy is 10 years younger than Prescott.

I turn my attention to dynasty leagues every Saturday during the season, rotating between the four notable positions. For these, I’m assuming standard scoring and operating under the assumption of a 12-team league, with each team holding about three quarterbacks and holding the rights to those players indefinitely. Rookies are tagged with black dots.
