Bears Part Ways With Head Coach Matt Eberflus

Throughout their history, the Chicago Bears have never fired a head coach during a season. That trend ended after the NFC North franchise ended Matt Eberflus’ tenure. The Bears’ 23-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving Day became the final wedge that led to his departure.

Better end-game clock management gave the Bears a fantastic opportunity to force overtime or win against Green Bay. Instead, they failed to call a timeout after Caleb Williams absorbed a sack and ran a play that kept them away from the end zone before time expired.

That result dropped the Bears to 4-8, an unfortunate record considering they have D’Andre Swift, Keenan Allen, DJ Moore, Rome Odunze, Cole Kmet, and 2024 first-overall draft pick Caleb Williams on their roster. Conversely, the Bears have a solid defensive unit led by Montez Sweat, Gervon Dexter Sr., Tremaine Edmunds, and All-Pro cornerback Jaylen Johnson.

The Bears hired Eberflus during the 2022 offseason. Before joining Chicago, he was the Indianapolis Colts' defensive coordinator for four seasons and also coached the Cleveland Browns and the Dallas Cowboys.

However, Eberflus failed to transform the Bears into a winning team. After a 3-14 record during his first year as Chicago’s head coach, he went 7-10 last year and 4-8 before firing.

Thomas Brown will take over from Eberflus as the Bears’ interim head coach, starting in Week 14 against the San Francisco 49ers. Brown joined the Bears after Shane Waldron’s firing earlier this month.
