Question
It’s looking like both the first quarterback and the first running back selected in the draft will come from the same state. Fernando Mendoza played at Indiana and Jeremiyah Love played at Notre Dame. When was the only other time in the Super Bowl era that the first players drafted at those positions came from different schools in the same state? Both were drafted into the same division, and both spent 10 years with the teams that picked them.
Answer
In 2011, Carolina picked Cam Newton (Auburn) No. 1 overall, and Mark Ingram (Alabama) was the first running back chosen, by the Saints. (Note that on three other occasions, the same school had the first players at both positions picked, most recently with Louisiana State (Burrow and Edwards-Helaire).
