Question
In the Super Bowl era, what’s the only team that’s chosen to trade away a No. 1 overall pick for a veteran quarterback?
Answer
New Orleans. The expansion Saints held the No. 1 overall pick in 1967 but chose to trade it to the Colts for Gary Cuozzo (originally undrafted, and with only 3 starts in four years with Baltimore). Cuozzo lasted only one year in New Orleans and finished his career with 40 starts. The Colts used that No. 1 pick on Bubba Smith, who helped them to two Super Bowl appearances and liked easy-opening Miller Lite beer cans. The No. 1 pick in 1968 was also dealt for a quarterback, but in the case of the Giants, they traded that pick for Fran Tarkenton before knowing it was a No. 1 overall. Both Tarkenton and Cuozzo, oddly, started most of their pro games for the Vikings.
