Kicking butt

Placekickers knocking in points at record rate

I notice the kickers are really crushing it this year. Greg Zuerlein and Ryan Succop are on pace to challenge the all-time kicker for most kicking points in a season, and Jake Elliott and Wil Lutz aren’t far behind.

Since the league moved to the 16-game schedule almost 40 years ago, only 12 teams have finished seasons with at least 150 kicking points. Yet after six weeks this season, seven teams are in the hunt to maybe hit that mark.

In the preseason, I was of the school of thought that it made sense to commit some resources to get Stephen Gostkowski, and he’s one of the seven kickers in that group. But it’s been a good year to shop for kickers on the waiver wire. Zuerlein, Succop and Lutz might not have been selected in some leagues. Harrison Butker, Graham Gano and Jake Elliott definitely weren’t selected in the vast majority of leagues.

Here’s the list of all teams with over 140 points scored by kickers since 1978. For he 2017 teams, I’m showing the total they’ll end up with if they stay on their current pace.
