Question

LeGarrette Blount ran for 766 yards in the regular season -- 234 yards short of being a 1,000-yard rusher for two different franchises making the Super Bowl (having run for 1.161 yards last year for New England). Who is the only running back who's actually done this (run for over 1,000 yards for two different franchises making the Super Bowl)? The two teams come from the same division.

Answer

Wendell Tyler. He ran for 1,109 yards in 1979 for the Rams, and that team lost to Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl. And Tyler ran for 1,262 yards for San Francisco in 1984; that team beat Miami in the Super Bowl (Tyler split time in that game, leading the team in rushing, but Roger Craig scored 3 TDs). Those were the two teams, oddly, that played in Super Bowls close to their home stadiums. As Dennis Lyons pointed out earlier in the week, Tyler is the only player to lead two different teams in rushing in a Super Bowl game.
