Younghoe Koo

Atlanta kicker piling up the points

Another big game for Younghoe Koo today. When the Falcons signed him halfway through last season (as a replacement for struggling Matt Bryant) I don’t think anyone realized how good he was going to be.

Koo scored a league-high 84 points in the second half of last season, and he’s been just as good this year, with 81 ponts in eight games (he missed one game with an injury). The Falcons are getting him on the field, and he’s making his kicks. He’s hit all 4 of his attempts from 50-plus.

This is unusual in that Koo doesn’t play for a powerhouse team. The Falcons didn’t make the playoffs last year, and barring some kind of miracle turnaround, they aren’t going to contend for a playoff berth this year, either.

Yet Koo in his last 16 games has scored 165 kicking point. In NFL history, only one kicker has scored more points in a season. Only 15 have managed 150-plus in a season.

Koo, of course, hasn’t yet complete a season, but if you put up his season’s worth of production, it looks awfully strong.
