Buffalo has announced its inactives for the game starting in an hour. Dalton Kincaid won’t play – the latest player to be sidelined by a concussion this year. On that front, there are have been more hits than misses.
Dawson Knox (who was also questionable) is active, so the Bills won’t be without both of their main tight ends.
With concussions, I generally defer to the injury report. But I went through all of the reports from this season earlier in the day, providing more of a big-picture look at the issue.
On concussions, there have been an even 50 players this season who’ve suffered concussions in games. Only 16 of them were able to complete the concussion protocol and make it back onto the field for their game the next week.
The hit rate is only slightly better if you look only at players listed as “questionable”. There have been 11 of them (including Kincaid and Tank Dell this week), and only five of them played.
In the chart below, you’re seeing the week the player appeared on the injury report, along with his status (out, doubtful, questionable or not listed) and his participation level in practices for the three days leading in the game. A few injury designations are flagged with an asterisk; for them, the team listed the player one way on Friday, then changed the designation on Saturday.
Note that I’m showing only players who suffered a concussion the previous week. I’m not listing players who are over a week removed from their head injuries (most of those guys play).
As a general rule of thumb, when a player suffers a concussion, best to not count on him until the team indicates that he’ll be playing.
