Giants' DT Leonard Williams off to Seahawks

Giants Trade Pro Bowler Williams for Future Draft Picks Amid Rebuilding Efforts

Uncommon mid-season swap with Seahawks frees essential cap space. The deal grants the Giants a second-round selection in the 2024 draft and a fifth-round choice in the 2025 draft.

For the 2-6 NY Giants, this uncommon mid-season swap frees up some essential cap space. Their Week 8 adversaries, the New York Jets, stood firm in overtime 13-10 in Week 8, nudging the Giants to a 2-6 season record, while Seattle clinched a victory over the Cleveland Browns (24-20), enhancing their standing to 5-2, positioning them solidly within the NFC playoff landscape.

This maneuver by the Giants' GM, Joe Schoen, is targeted at amplifying cap space for the squad—the Giants had roughly $508,000 in available cap space before the deal, and Williams bore the heftiest contract on the Giants' roster this season ($18 million base salary) with a cap figure surpassing $32 million.

The specifics regarding whether the Giants will cover any portion of Williams' $32M 2023 salary as part of the deal, speculated to be around $10M, remain unclear. However, the swap liberates cap space the Giants sorely needed.
