The first-ever Friday night football game is in the books. Amazon paid over $100 million for it, and I think they may want their money back. A prime-time game we would have hoped for if Aaron Rodgers was still under center, but hey, more football is better than less football. Let’s dive into the key takeaways.
The Jets are shutting down quarterbacks
Tua Tagovailoa threw two ill-advised interceptions by short-changing an out route twice. The Jets have shut down quarterbacks left and right: Justin Herbert, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and now Tua. The only quarterback to put good numbers against the Jets so far this season is Josh Allen (and he struggled against them in one of his two games). The Jets have games coming up against some other notable quarterbacks: C.J. Stroud, Sam Howell and Tua again. Best to stay away from those matchups if possible.
Jeff Wilson is back
Coming off of their bye in Week 10, Wilson was a healthy scratch because DeVon Achane was back from injured reserve. As quick as Achane made it into the game, he exited just as quickly with yet another injury. That opened the door for Wilson to play on Friday. He looked fresh on his return. Almost a glimpse of last season's Jeff Wilson, when he solid while splitting time with Raheem Mostert. Mostert was still the primary back and looked excellent, but Wilson was a great complement as second fiddle. Wilson was also used in the passing game. Going forward, Miami’s featured back will put up good numbers, but whoever is their No. 2 also has some appeal. Achane’s injury likely will only kept him out this game, but if he were to miss more time, Wilson could be nice against the Commanders, who are struggling defensively.
Tim Boyle wasn’t an upgrade
Just box score hunting wouldn’t tell you the whole story with Tim Boyle. He has a 71 percent completion percentage, but he had a ton of passes at or behind the line of scrimmage. The Jets running backs got 13 targets, while the tight ends combined for another nine. Great news for Breece Hall, bad news for Garrett Wilson. Wilson saved his day by snagging a touchdown and getting every extra yard he could after the catch, but he’s still not a reliable option every week given the quarterbacks on their carousel. With a ton of teams on bye next week, the Atlanta Falcons defense might be worth picking up.
