Brandon Aiyuk Officially Requesting a Trade From 49ers

NFL Network insider Mike Garofolo first reported that wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has officially requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers. Both parties have been unable to agree regarding Aiyuk’s contract extension mainly because of the surging wideout market.

As The Athletic NFL insider Dianna Russini shared with FS1's Colin Cowherd, the 49ers reportedly offered Aiyuk a contract with an annual average salary of $27 million. However, he declined the offer, hoping he could get a more lucrative contract that could bring him closer to the top salaries at his position.

For reference, Justin Jefferson reset the market after signing a four-year, $140 million extension. Meanwhile, A.J. Brown signed a three-year, $96 million contract, resulting in a $32 million average. Aiyuk's camp might establish their client's value as somewhere between Jefferson and Brown.

It's not the first time the 49ers have dealt with a player requesting a trade. Aiyuk's fellow wideout, Deebo Samuel, requested a trade in 2022. However, he eventually signed a three-year, $71.5 million contract extension.

Likewise, can the 49ers pull off the same result despite the pressure Aiyuk placed on the franchise? Remember, while Aiyuk has requested a trade, the 49ers have the leverage for non-compliance because they have Aiyuk under contract this season and could offer him the franchise tag in 2025.

But if a trade happens, the Washington Commanders might be Brandon Aiyuk's top destination because of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.
