Mixed Results for Rookie QBs in Initial Depth Charts

With the 2024 season fast approaching, NFL teams have released their initial depth charts as training camp continues. However, the results show varying fates for the quarterbacks selected in the first round of this year’s draft.

The Minnesota Vikings continue to put J.J. McCarthy behind Sam Darnold in the depth chart. While they traded up to select the former Michigan standout, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell believes the CFP National Championship-winning quarterback isn’t ready to be their starter. O’Connell mentioned that McCarthy must satisfy certain milestones before they deem him worthy of QB1 status.

Meanwhile, Bo Nix faced the same outcome when the Denver Broncos released their depth chart. He was third on the list behind Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson. Broncos head coach Sean Payton rarely gives extensive playing time to rookies, especially quarterbacks. However, Nix has a month to go to change Payton’s mind.

For the Washington Commanders, rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels tops the depth chart in front of Marcus Mariota, Jeff Driskel, and Sam Hartman. Despite that initial status, Daniels might not see action during the preseason.

Finally, Caleb Williams has a high chance of being the Chicago Bears’ starter from Day 1. He’s the most talented quarterback on the roster, giving them the best chance to win. He did not see action during the Hall of Fame game against the Houston Texans, but the Bears won’t likely tap Tyson Bagent, Brett Rypien, or Austin Reed as their starter.
