Rookie Quarterbacks Square Off In Primetime For The First Time

In a game with playoff implications, the Atlanta Falcons will visit the Washington Commanders in Week 17 of the 2024 National Football League season. Both teams are trying to clinch a postseason spot, and the impending quarterback matchup is of historical significance.

As the Sunday Night Football on NBC account on X/Twitter pointed out, the Falcons versus Commanders game will be the first primetime game in NFL history to feature two rookie starting quarterbacks in the first round of the NFL Draft.

The Commanders have Jayden Daniels, who has started for the team since Week 1. Through Week 16, the former LSU standout has 3,303 passing yards, 737 rushing yards, and 28 total touchdowns (22 passing). Daniels has won ten Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week awards, breaking the record Ben Roethlisberger established in 2004.

Meanwhile, the Falcons will have Michael Penix Jr. as starter. The former Washington standout took over from Kirk Cousins and helped the team win 34-7 in Week 16 over the New York Giants. Penix had 18 completions for 202 yards and an interception.

A victory by the Falcons could help them inch closer to an NFC South division title. Meanwhile, the Commanders can solidify their position as a Wild Card team or shorten the gap with the Philadelphia Eagles for the NFC East title.
