A Day of Football

Week 5 Was a Mixed Bag of Tight Games and Blowouts

Don’t look now, but we’re already in week five of the NFL slate. It was another full Sunday of action, starting with the 9:30 am ET from London that saw three lead changes in the last four minutes, not to mention two in the last eight seconds! We saw more of a mixed bag in the early window as there were three games decided by one score and one game that ended up as a tie due to the ineptitude of both teams to execute in the final minutes of overtime. Two of the three late window games were decided by one score. Meanwhile, the primetime game went to overtime before we had a winner.

On the flip side, we had six games decided by double figures. Four of those contests were decided by at least 23 points. Let’s take a look at what went down Sunday.

Philadelphia vs. Jacksonville (in London): The day started off with a 9:30 am ET start with the interconference tilt in London. You’d be forgiven for not paying a ton of attention as the Eagles were without Devonta Smith, Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby, Lane Johnson and Cam Jurgens. For that matter, they didn’t have Ron Jaworski, Steve Van Buren or Harold Carmichael. This game was a slog most of the way. Philadelphia stoned Jacksonville on a 4th and goal at the 1 right before the half to maintain a 14-10 lead. The score stayed that way until Jacksonville scored with 3:20 remaining but Cam Little missed the extra point. Jalen Hurts led Philadelphia to a go-ahead field goal with eight seconds to play. However, the Eagles gave up a 53-yard kick return and Little atoned for his earlier miss by hitting from 57 at the gun to win it. Big showing for Trevor Lawrence (331 pass yards, 25 rush yards, two TD, INT) and Parker Washington (seven grabs, 124 yards, two TD) for the Jags. Will Shipley (foot) went down in the first half, leaving the Eagles with Dameon Pierce (11 carries, 14 yards) as the lead back.

Chicago at Green Bay: Notre Dame may have won one for the Gipper but the Bears didn’t win one for Iron Mike. Green Bay actually got off to a strong start and the Bears never recovered in this contest. Jordan Love had a big game, hitting 25 of 31 for 367 yards and two scores. Christian Watson (six for 143, two scores) and Matthew Golden (five for 123) both went over the century mark. Tight end Tucker Kraft (five for 64) had a solid showing as well as each had a pass play of at least 45 yards. Good thing since the run game was still stuck in mud. Chicago should have Caleb Williams back next week and hopefully have Kyle Monangai as well. Tyson Bagent (12 of 21, 87 yards, two INT, 17 rush yards) and Case Keenum (11 of 19, 108 yards, INT) didn’t have the magic they had the last two weeks. Colston Loveland (two catches, 19 yards on five targets) continues to let fantasy owners down.

Houston at Tennessee: In a battle of 0-4 teams, Houston stifled Tennessee after the opening drive. This was more of what we expected from the Texans defense as they held the Titans to 187 yards of offense, recorded four sacks and forced a pair of turnovers in the win. Woody Marks (15 carries, 62 yards, four catches, 23 yards) got the lion’s share of the work for Houston in the backfield. David Montgomery (five carries, 11 yards) continues to disappoint. He left early in the second quarter with a groin injury. For Tennessee, rookie first-round pick Carnell Tate was stifled, limited to one catch on five targets for six yards. Wan’Dale Robinson got seven looks (six for 53) while Tyjae Spears caught nine out of the backfield, though they went for just 28 yards. CJ Stroud was efficient, hitting seven different receivers at least twice in the game. Houston completed their trade with Arizona for Marvin Harrison Jr. Sunday afternoon. The Texans sent second and sixth-round picks in the 2027 NFL Draft to the Cardinals for Harrison Jr. and a seventh-round pick in 2027.

Cincinnati at Miami: Rather pedestrian showing for Cincinnati in this one. Sure, they scored 31 points but they had six drives start beyond their own 40-yard line. You should be able to put points on the board with that kind of starting field position. Joe Burrow was efficient, hitting 23 of 29 for 190 yards and four touchdowns. Samaje Perine took over a big chunk of the run game after a Chase Brown fumble. He finished with 14 carries for 68 yards and added two catches for 10 yards and a score. Brown (13 carries, 39 yards, three catches, 21 yards) was less effective. For Miami, good showing for Ollie Gordon II (18 carries, 88 yards, TD) as he dominated the workload over Jaylen Wright (six carries, 11 yards) in the run game. Malik Willis was pedestrian in the passing game (15/27, 137 yards, TD, two INT, three sacks, lost fumble) but made up for it somewhat with eight carries for 74 yards and a score on the ground.

Las Vegas at New England:New England’s offense was firing on all cylinders here and this was not the performance the Raiders wanted after pushing the Chiefs to the limit last week. Drake Maye had his best game of the year, hitting 26 of 34 for 374 yards and four scores. He added 25 yards and a score on the ground. Rhamondre Stevenson (13 carries, 64 yards, TD, three receptions, 21 yards) saw more work than TreVeyon Henderson (four carries, 22 yards, catch, 16 yards) in the game. Corey Kiner (six carries, 52 yards) got some work. Watch for updates during the week on Henderson (ankle) and left tackle Will Campbell (knee) to see if they’re out for any time. Kirk Cousins (19 of 28, 243 yards, TD) was effective but the Raiders had no run game to speak of. Brock Bowers (eight catches, 110 yards, TD) continues to be a tough matchup for opposing defenses. We saw first overall pick Fernando Mendoza make his NFL debut. He was six of eight for 48 yards in mop-up duty.

Minnesota at New Orleans: In a battle of domed teams, Minnesota overcame some self-inflicted wounds to remain unbeaten on the season. The Vikings should have won the game going away but committed a pair of turnovers in the red zone. Minnesota dominated time of possession by a 39:37 to 20:23 margin. Kyler Murray (24 of 30, 229 yards, TD, 51 rush yards) was efficient. Aaron Jones Sr. (25 carries, 113 yards, TD) continues to take advantage of a big workload with Jordan Mason on IR. Justin Jefferson returned and caught six balls for 73 yards and a score. Minnesota didn’t have Jordan Addison and lost T.J. Hockenson to a concussion on the second play. I’m sure everyone had Gavin Bartholomew (five catches, 33 yards) on their radar. For the Saints, no run game to speak of and Tyler Shough (16 of 25, 96 yards, two INT) was blitzed relentlessly by Brian Flores’ defense. The Kendre Miller (10 carries, 30 yards, TD) and Alvin Kamara (three carries, 12 yards) duo is not getting it done.

Cleveland at New York Jets: It was a monsoon in East Rutherford and it seemed only fitting that the weather played a role in the result. Neither offense was overwhelming in the game and the Jets led 7-6 after three quarters. Cleveland took a 12-10 lead with 6:15 remaining on a 29-yard touchdown pass to Denzel Boston but they missed the extra point. The Browns forced a fumble with 4:13 remaining and had a chance to take a stranglehold on the game but their ensuing drive lasted all of 21 seconds. A botched snap on a punt set the Jets up at the Browns’ 23-yard line. Braelon Allen (24 carries, 116 yards, TD) scored the winning points on a 22-yard TD run on third down and the Jets’ defense did the rest. Garrett Wilson (seven grabs, 104 yards, TD) had a big game for the Jets. Deshaun Watson struggled, hitting 15 of 33 passes for 155 yards and a score while adding 46 yards on the ground. He was sacked eight times and fumbled three times, losing one, in the game. David Bailey had three sacks, making him the second Jets’ rookie to accomplish that feat after Hugh Douglas in 1995.

Indianapolis at Pittsburgh: Don’t look now but Pittsburgh actually had a couple explosive plays on Sunday as they beat the Colts. In case you were still holding out hope for Rico Dowdle, he may become as relevant as Wally Pipp. Jaylen Warran continued his barrage as the workhorse back for the Steelers. He had 15 carries for 101 yards while adding six catches for 87 yards in the game. Warren scored on a 50-yard run and an 80-yard reception in the game. Aaron Rodgers threw for 235 yards and three scores. With Michael Pittman Jr. out, Germie Bernard (six catches, 80 yards on nine targets) stepped up in the game while Pat Freiermuth (five grabs, 44 yards) added two scores. Indianapolis continues to flounder defensively and their receiver group is uninspiring. Tyler Warren (seven catches, 83 yards, rush TD) continues to be their top receiving threat. The Colts have to get something going quickly or they’ll fall out of playoff contention.

New York Giants at Washington: Washington blew a two-touchdown lead in the fourth quarter and both teams botched opportunities to win in overtime. As a result, the NFC East rivals ended up with the first tie in the league since last September, when Green Bay and Dallas tied at 40. Jameis Winston continued to throw a ton, going 33 of 54 for 326 yards and three scores. Malik Nabers (11 catches, 121 yards, TD) and tight end Isaiah Likely (11 catches, 94 yards, two TD) had big games for the Giants. Missing Stefon Diggs and with Terry McLaurin dealing with a hamstring injury of his own, Jayden Daniels had a quiet game through the air (17 of 25, 199 yards) but ran for 103 yards and two scores. Jacory Croskey-Merritt (11 carries, 82 yards, TD) saw more in the run game than Rachaad White (seven carries, 18 yards) and Austin Ekeler (three carries, -1 yard) in the game. The Commanders needed that win as they now are 0-2-1 against NFC East foes. New York missed a field goal on their first drive in OT and had Cam Skattebo fumble in field goal range on the second. Washington was in field goal range in the dying seconds but rather than spike the ball or kick the field goal, they tried to run another play. Daniels was sacked on a scramble and time ran out.

Denver at Los Angeles Chargers: Pour one out for the Chargers, who now are 0-5 and pretty much dead in the water. Los Angeles folded in the fourth quarter, blowing a 17-10 lead as they were outscored 13-0 in the final stanza. Justin Herbert (14 of 24, 121 yards, TD, INT, fumble lost, 54 rush yards) sputtered without Ladd McConkey. Omarion Hampton had the most carries (14) but finished with just 33 yards. Kimani Vidal (eight carries, 57 yards, TD) and Keaton Mitchell (six carries, 11 yards, three catches, 18 yards) were also involved in what is quickly devolving into a timeshare. For Denver, Bo Nix sputtered again, going 16 of 27 for 123 yards and a score. Denver has scored 35 points in the first three quarters this season and 42 in the fourth. Sean Payton’s offensive playcalling didn’t generate much more to write home about than Davis Webb’s did. The Broncos need an injection of offense fast.

Detroit at Arizona: Detroit’s offense was firing on all cylinders and, facing a defense was their equal in terms of being pitiful, coasted to a one-sided win. The Lions scored 24 second quarter points and poured it on en route to victory. Another nice game for Jahmyr Gibbs (151 rushing yards, five catches, 56 yards, two TD) as he tore up the Cardinals’ defense. Jared Goff had a quiet day (19 of 30, 271 yards, three scores), as did Jameson Williams, who caught only two balls for 47 yards. The saving grace for him from a fantasy perspective is both catches went for scores. Jacoby Brissett did it all to try and keep Arizona in the game (29 of 47, 292 yards, three TD, INT, 19 rush yards, reception, seven yards) in the contest. No run game for the Cardinals as Jeremiyah Love (12 carries, 22 yards) was bottled up. Another good game for Trey McBride (nine receptions, 66 yards, TD) while Kendrick Bourne (five grabs, 70 yards) outperformed Michael Wilson (four catches, 30 yards) in the game.

San Francisco at Seattle: In a game that was uncharacteristically sloppy, the 49ers made the last two key plays to come up with the win. Eddy Piniero hit the go-ahead 44-yard field goal with 1:56 remaining and then the defense pushed out Cooper Kupp just shy of the first down on a 4th and 10 play with 47 seconds to go that was upheld by replay. There were a season-high seven turnovers (three by San Francisco, four by Seattle) and there was just one touchdown drive of more than 25 yards in the game. Neither team got near 300 yards of offense yet we saw 61 points. Mike Evans (seven grabs, 113 yards, TD) outdueled Jaxon Smith-Njigba (five receptions, 102 yards, TD) in the game. Smith-Njigba also dropped a pass that would have put the Seahawks in field goal range the play before the Kupp fourth-down reception. Deebo Samuel Sr. fumbled and left the game without returning. Watch for updates on him.

Baltimore at Atlanta: No Lamar Jackson for the Ravens but Tyler Huntley made plays down the stretch to help them rally. Baltimore scored the tying touchdown and two-point conversion with 40 seconds to go in regulation and then ground the Falcons’ defense down by taking 7:03 off the clock to go 68 yards in 14 plays, capped by Huntley’s one-yard TD run. Kyle Hamilton picked off Tua Tagovailoa two plays later to secure the win. Huntley threw for 201 yards plus two scores and added 20 rushing yards plus a score in the game. Derrick Henry ran for 102 and Justice Hill had 73 on four carries, including a 47-yard run, as the Ravens ran for 208 yards against a Falcons’ defense that was #1 in run defense at 48.3 ypg entering Sunday. Bijan Robinson (17 carries, 86 yards, four catches, 32 yards) didn’t have as big a game as usual in primetime. Drake London (seven catches, 118 yards) turned in a third straight big game with Penix Jr. under center. Even Kyle Pitts (five grabs, 42 yards, TD) had flashes in this contest. The question is, will Penix Jr. miss any time with the rib injury he sustained late in regulation?

The Monday night affair likely is a track meet. When we saw these two teams meet last time, the Rams pulled out a 44-42 win in a game where Josh Allen threw for three scores and ran for three more. Los Angeles is healthier and we’re still trying to find the right personnel for the Bills’ defensive scheme under new coordinator Jim Leonard. I expect a lot of points here but with DJ Moore’s status murky while the Rams’ duo of Puka Nacua and Davante Adams are healthy, look for Los Angeles to earn a 31-27 win.
