Vikings, Christian Darrisaw Agree to Four-Year Extension

The Minnesota Vikings and offensive tackle Christian Darrisaw agreed to terms on a four-year, $113 million contract extension. Since the Vikings exercised the fifth-year option of his rookie-scale deal, the extension keeps him signed with Minnesota until the 2029 NFL season.

While the yearly terms of Darrisaw’s contract extension remain undisclosed, the $28.25 million annual average of his second contract makes him the NFL’s highest-paid offensive tackle. He earned this massive payday by becoming a stalwart on the Vikings offensive line, even if he doesn’t have Pro Bowl or All-Pro selections.

Missing some games might have dampened his chances of getting some individual accolades. While he hasn’t completed a regular season, he played 15 games last year, a slight improvement from his 14 in 2022 and 12 during his rookie season.

Darrisaw’s blocking versatility makes him invaluable to Minnesota’s offensive line. Pro Football Focus recognized his talent by giving him an 82.4 overall grade last season. That mark consists of his 85.3 pass-blocking grade and 73.9 run-blocking mark.

While Darrisaw has $77 million in guaranteed money from his lucrative contract extension, the starting quarterback he will be blocking for might undergo a transition. The Vikings faithful hope that J.J. McCarthy will turn into a franchise quarterback.

However, head coach Kevin O’Connell would like the former Michigan standout to ease into his pro football career without pressure. In the meantime, Sam Darnold will likely start until O’Connell deems McCarthy ready.
