The Detroit Lions have one of the NFL’s most exciting offensive units, and David Montgomery is a massive reason for that distinction. As one half of the ‘Sonic and Knuckles’ backfield with Jahmyr Gibbs, the veteran from Iowa State has helped the Lions win nine of their first ten games. What’s more impressive is that he’s helping the team succeed while joining some franchise legends.
As tweeted by the team’s official account on X (formerly Twitter), Montgomery became the third player in franchise history to have at least ten rushing touchdowns in consecutive seasons. Billy Sims did it first when he had 13 touchdowns in 1980 (his rookie year) and 1981.
Meanwhile, Pro Football Hall of Famer Barry Sanders did it twice for the Lions. He had 14, 13, and a career-high 16 touchdowns from 1989 to 1991. Then, he had 11 touchdowns for each season from 1995 to 1997.

Montgomery had 1,015 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns in his first season with the Lions. This year, he has ten touchdowns after crossing the goal line twice in Detroit’s 52-6 Week 11 demolition of the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has scored a rushing TD in eight of the Lions’ ten games and has two multiple-touchdown matches.
Montgomery can boost his numbers when he and the Lions face the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Nov. 24. He and Gibbs could have a field day because the Colts ranked 28th in rushing yards allowed per game at 143.1.
