The National Football League introduced new kickoff rules in the 2024 season. While the new rules negated the surprise presented by onside kicks, it generally yielded positive results, as NFL Executive Vice President Jeff Miller said.
As The 33rd Team writer Ari Meirov tweeted, Miller said that the new kickoff rules translated to a 57 percent increase in returns. Likewise, the average starting position for the offense improved, including more returns beyond the 40-yard line. Teams also scored more touchdowns from kickoffs.
The NFL patterned their new kickoff rules after the XFL. While kickers still strike the ball from their team’s 35-yard line, the rest of the kicking team is on the opponent’s 40-yard line. Meanwhile, at least nine players from the receiving team must be on their 35-yard line.

Finally, up to two members from the receiving team must be in the landing zone between the goal line and the 20-yard line. Only the placekicker can move until he strikes the ball. Kicks that fall in the landing zone must be returned.
Meanwhile, kicks that reach the end zone can be downed for a touchback, giving the offense possession from their 20-yard line. Finally, kicks that sail out of the back of the end zone are an automatic touchback, giving the receiving team possession from their 30-yard line.
